Tea Lounge, Canal Bar sketches

This couple was probably on their first date, or rather, the day after their 1st date. I mean, this guy was slick, I have no doubt he got with her right away. I'm assuming they weren't yet a couple, because they actually seemed interested in one another.;)
I stopped into Canal Bar on my way home yesterday evening and sketched this, I finally captured Terra, and the elusive Sal. Faye made it in there as well, but she wasn't quite happy with how I had posed her out. Thanks for the mexican food!

old post-it notes

Since I don't have the internets at home (neighbours finally cock blocked me)- I figured since I'm over at the tea lounge I'd post up some old sketches. These ones when Hubert Chan was visiting, and Hubert is going to have another film this year in the Animation Block party film fest....and he's probably going to guilt me into working on it (just kidding) but I'll be proud when it's all over and we're sitting on some rooftop, with some wine and or beer, enjoying being apart of this great NYC animation/art community. The first sketch is of Hubert, who never ceases to impress with his cool hair styles.

Lazy Sunday

Sunday afternoon sketches, I started out at the Tea Lounge where there were plenty of people to draw and observe. This one especially pretty girl I could only put down a few lines before I ruined it. I could not possibly re-produce how beautiful this girl really was. I decided to do a couple of drawings of my apartment kitchen before I curled up into a ball and cried…just kidding, I didn’t curl up into a ball.

Valentime's day

This Valentine's day, I'll be cozying up to my new sweetheart, Stella Artois.
The Gentleman below will hopefully be a proud father of a healthy baby today,
And Wilbur will have had his new Ipod for 4 days now.

Missing Grant Sligh

I didn't know Grant Sligh all that well, but I did have the pleasure of working with him on a couple of occasions and having a few cold ones with him many times. It's real sad when a fellow animator passes away at such a young age, and the reason I'm bringing his name up is that I want people to know that he was a real stand up guy. Even though I'm pretty sure he blocked my email at some point, he always had such nice things to say to me, he would always say..."you're still at the lab , eh? well....you could go anywhere you wanted to...you're fucking skilled man.., or was it, "you're foookin' skeeld " . He was fucking skilled. I'll miss you, Grant.

I clean out my pockets every now and again, or rather, I lay my jacket down on top of another pile of jackets, and my sketchbook falls out, along with some random napkin drawings. Sometimes I scan them into the computer.

Straight ahead animation , what else can I say? Has any girl ever puked on YOU? It almost happened to me once, but I've been puked on by a couple of my guy friends, and certainly I've puked on myself, but a girl has yet to, not that I want it to happen.
I puked on my friend Eric's head once while he was driving, then he hit a parked car. Good times.

Canal Bar Napkins

So amidst the move of Flickerlab to it's new digs over on 19th and Broadway, I managed to smuggle the scanner and set it up next to me, thus, more postings. I dropped by Canal bar yesterday eve, with the intention of paying my $25 entry fee for their Superbowl pool and having A beer. Five beers later and after a nice chat with Andy, Melissa and a few others I decided to call it a night. There are a slew of Napkin drawings that you'll never see because I gave them all away, except for this one...... I'm glad everyone was so pleased with my sketches, and thanks for the beer guys!

St. Joseph's Hospital

I haven't posted anything for a while not because I haven't been drawing much, you see, I've been working my butt off on a few things, one of which is this ad for St. Joseph's Cancer Hospital in Maryland. It should be airing starting this week, It was designed and art directed by David Michael Friend, and the spot looks really beautiful.

This is the cleaned up animation on sc #5 (done using flash and the cintiq tablet). Frank Digregorio cleaned up and Inbetweened most of the chars behind the lovely lady in front.
I roughed this whole scene out over the holidays, while everyone was off with family. Luckily we still had some straggling bottles of Frangelico from an Ad we did last year for them. It goes really well with coffee, try it, you'll see.
My inspiration from this scene came from a woman in union sq as she turned around to see who was approaching her (me).
I had planned to go shopping and I'd imagined a woman folding clothes and as she turned around to offer help I'd record her movements, but It never got that far. The lady in the square took care of that.

Happy Travels

This sketch kicked off a day of waiting around all day at Laguardia airport this summer waiting for an open seat that would take me to Saskatoon, then home for a few days. I won't miss standing around in the lounge for 12 hours this holiday season, eating chips and looking at women. I can do that at home. So , for those travellers out there, have a safe flight and fly continental. I'll be in Brooklyn eating some chips in my kitchen. I might have a beer or two also. Do they have a bar at Laguardia?

subways and halls

I was drawing this lady on the ride home last week, the lady next to me (who was coughing incessantly) asked to see the final sketch, she really liked it, I thanked her and then asked if I could draw her. This happened right about the time we pulled into Dekalb, so with only two stops to sketch her I ended up with chicken scratches and although she may have been happy to keep my drawing of her I didn’t even give her the option. I showed her and exited at Union St. , she smiled . Then as I walked away, she coughed.

Girls on cell phones

A lot of girls talk on their cell phones while walking the streets and I find it really annoying. I suppose that a lot of guys do as well, but I mostly notice the women.

Napkins and chasers

I was chased by a gang of 4 thugs about 30 mins after sketching this at Long Tan bar on 5th Ave. I was also carrying 2 bottles of wine (one white, one red-shiraz I believe). Imagine the dilemma I was in, do I turn and confront them?, do I surrender?, should I throw the bottles at them?, should I throw the bottles aside? If I throw one bottle, and keep one, which one should I keep? I was leaning towards keeping the Red, and I was convinced I’d be spending the next month in the hospital, when amazingly I reached a crowded intersection and they ceased their pursuit. The only other time I ran nearly that fast was when a girl chased me out of the Cherry Tree Tavern on 4th Ave this April for drawing a tattoo of a penis on her back. (She kind of deserved it though).
